As well as maybe incorporating motion or pressure sensors to trigger the playback system sounds as opposed to them always playing back could be an intriguing way to subtly invite an audience into the piece. There is room to further develop the surround sound part of the piece I believe. I feel that what I have created here could be viewed as a digital version of what the Dada and Fluxus ideas suggested but taken further. Some of the works by John Cage, Yoko Ono and various members of the Fluxus movement have used cut-up and random chance methods too in their work to great effect albeit with analogue technology. What I like about the interactive system I’ve created is that It still feels very much connected to my original idea with its use of a random selection process to create a nonlinear playback of ‘organised’ words but also allows a multitude of options sonically and musically depending on the content input and the user interation.Īrtists such as William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and David Bowie have applied cut-up techniques in their poems and lyrics using paper & pen versions of the Tristan Tzara suggestion in the Dada Manifesto to create a Dadaist poem (mentioned in a previous blogpost titled Time and space – initial ideas on 18 October 2015.

There is also a random element to the playback of files that suggests the user could attempt to improvise alongside the systems choice of files to play.Īrtistically I now feel my initial idea of creating a Dadaist poem generator was a perfect starting point for what helped develop the idea contextually once the system was working. Some reflection on the piece led to the following. This was followed up with valuable constructive feedback. The system worked fully and many audience members were interested enough to want to interact with the system and perform with it.

The Max patch and TouchOSC interface performed as expected while being presented, (video evidence exists).
This meant that for my presentation and submission I used an earlier TouchOSC iPad interface without all the interactivity I had designed to be part of the system. I still have the screenshots and the patch and would very much like to test on another iPad for where the corruption of the file may be. After reconfiguration and creating the same patch again from memory and a screenshot that I had created the same issue occurred leading me to believe there must be a bug in the software.

Further investigation showed a full reinstall of the iPad app software was required but this still wouldn’t load the patch. This caused damage to the patch and subsequently would not transfer or allow the app on the iPad to load. My system functioned well and it was an enjoyable experience to present my work, hear feedback from interested audience members and answer their questions.ġ8 hours previously TouchOSC had crashed and corrupted the interface patch file while syncing from the Touch OSC Editor software on my Macbook Pro.
